Conservators of historic and unpaved roads

Preservation engages the past in a conversation with the present over a mutual concern for the future.

~William Murtagh

First Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places

Philipstown is home to the only two roads in New York on the State and National Registers of Historic Places: Old Albany Post Road and Indian Brook Road.

‚ÄčThe Old Road Society is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of the historic Old Albany Post Road and all of Philipstown's unpaved roads.

Old Road Society

Before there was Route 6, there was Old Albany Post Road.  Still constructed of dirt and gravel, OAPR has been in continued service since 1669, most notably during the Revolutionary War.

The 6-mile section of dirt road retains the original milestones placed by
Benjamin Franklin.
